Before Edward Scissorhands was a movie icon, he was a drawing from Tim Burton’s teenage years. Burton created the image of a lonely young man with sharp blades for fingers while growing up in suburban California, using the character to express feelings of isolation and the difficulty of connecting with other people. Years later, that sketch became Edward Scissorhands (1990) — and marked the first film collaboration between Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. Scholastic Art
There’s another great detail hidden in those famous hands: special-effects legend Stan Winston developed Burton’s original concept into actual scissors for fingers, studying different types of scissors and pruning shears to make each blade distinctive. Most of the movie blades were actually lightweight resin made to look like metal.
