There’s a friend in him — and for millions of fans, there has been since 1995. Woody made his big-screen debut in Pixar’s Toy Story as Andy’s beloved pull-string cowboy sheriff, whose comfortable position as the favorite toy is suddenly threatened by the arrival of Buzz Lightyear. Woody’s loyalty, insecurities, courage, and devotion to his kid helped make him the emotional heart of a movie that also made history: Toy Story was the world’s first feature-length computer-animated film. Here’s a fun piece of Woody history: he wasn’t originally Woody as we know him at all. Early development paired the character who would evolve into Woody with Tinny from Pixar’s Tin Toy, and Woody began as a ventriloquist dummy before the filmmakers decided to make him a cowboy—the old-fashioned opposite of their flashy new space toy. Director John Lasseter also revealed that Woody was inspired in part by his own childhood pull-string Casper the Friendly Ghost doll. In other words, one of animation’s most famous toys was partly inspired by a real favorite toy from someone’s childhood—which feels pretty perfect for Toy Story. D23
