Tiny mouse, enormous troublemaker — and usually the one who gets the last laugh! Jerry first appeared alongside Tom in MGM’s Puss Gets the Boot in 1940, although neither character yet had the famous pairing of names we know today. William Hanna later recalled the mouse as “Jinx,” and after the cartoon’s success, MGM held a contest to rename the duo. Animator John Carr suggested Tom and Jerry and reportedly won $50 for the idea. Wikipedia
